Applications invited for MSc in Environmental Pollution Control programme at University of Southampton

The prestigious UK-based University of Southampton’s Centre for Environmental Studies (CES) has opened applications for the MSc in Environmental Pollution Control degree. The programme offers an in-depth exploration of scientific basics of pollution and the practical approaches to its control. The Centre for Environmental Sciences (CES) at the University is a collaborative enterprise operating across the University, with inputs from other science disciplines in Biological Sciences, Geography, and Ocean & Earth Science, as well as CES’s home, Engineering and the Environment. Environmental scientists are at the sharp end of dealing with the challenges that endanger our very existence; managing our natural environment’s sustainably and seeking ways to balance it with economic and social concerns. The students under the MSc in Environmental Pollution Control degree will work closely with the industry and governments to address some of the key problems facing the world today; including mitigating the effects of, and adapting to climate change, sustainable development, conservation of biodiversity & environmental protection, resource management, and pollution control. Under this programme, students will work across sectors with reputed engineers, scientists and enthusiasts; with whom they share a common focus on the impacts and management of human activities on the natural environment.

The ability to accurately monitor emissions to the environment and mitigate their harmful impacts sits at the heart of this diverse Environmental Science masters degree, which focuses on developing the professional skills required for a rewarding career as an environmental pollution scientist. Students will learn to measure and monitor air, water and waste pollution, remediate problems and examine the latest technologies in the field. They will also develop practical skills to apply innovative research techniques, present arguments and understand how research funding works. Moreover, in each semester students will have an additional option to choose from extra modules like Water and Waste Water Engineering, Coastal Flood Defence, Energy Resources & Engineering, etc. for added knowledge and further specializations. The main aim of this course is to equip its students with a diverse range of professional and transferable skills that help in career building and further research.

Programme Duration: 1 year

Eligibility Criterion: Candidates must have a first class or atleast a second class upper honours degree in Environmental Sciences, Geography, Zoology, Oceanography, Biology, Geology or Physics or an equivalent standard in other qualifications approved by the University. Applicants with a first class or atleast an upper second-class honours degree in Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering or Mathematics or an equivalent standard in other qualifications approved by the University may also apply. These entries will be subject to admission only after excelling a university-conducted interview.

Course Commencement: September 2018

Course fee: £20,550

Scholarships: Students applying for this programme are eligible for Southampton Merit Scholarships worth £3,000, the Chevening Scholarship and the Commonwealth Scholarships. These scholarships will be in the form of a tuition fee reduction.

Application deadline: Early applications are advisable by 28th February 2018 with only 30-35 seats across all Environmental Management pathways; although, the application deadline is 30th June 2018.
