CKP to have an evening college from next year

For those who always wanted to pursue a fine arts course while working, the solution is all but here.

Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath (CKP) plans to start an evening college from the 2018-19 academic year.

B.L. Shankar, president of the Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath Trust Committee, said this was to help people who were unable to take up fine arts because of their work. The move has been approved by Bangalore University and it has received the approval of the Department of Higher Education.

“The file has been forwarded to the Higher Education Minister and the approval is expected in the coming week,” a senior official in the department said.

Three-year programme

To begin with, the college plans to admit 30 students into its three-year undergraduate programme. Classes will most likely be held from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. “In case there is a shortfall of the number of hours, we will conduct classes over the weekend as well,” Mr. Shankar said, and added that there was a need for the college to hire additional faculty members.

First year, students will have a common foundation course. Later, they can pick their specialisation. Some of the specialisations to be offered are painting, graphic, animation, sculpture, and ceramics.

Currently, the college offers bachelor’s and master’s degree in visual arts, doctoral programmes, and short-term courses. The evening college will function on the same campus.

CKP has got Rs. 20 crore funds for the construction of its second campus at Kengeri. A museum, a gallery and a practice area for artists are likely to come up there.
