“8% Reservation for Hyderabad-Karnataka region applies to Deemed Universities as well”

8 per cent reservation for students from Hyderabad-Karnataka region in educational institutions also applies to deemed universities said Minister for Higher Education R.V. Deshpande in a reply to a question from Amarnath Patil in the Legislative

rv deshpande education minister, karnataka

Council on Thursday.

He said the stand of the educational institutions was that, being deemed universities, they were not obliged to reserve 8 per cent of their seats for students from Hyderabad-Karnataka. Implementation of Article 371 (J) of the Constitution provides special status, reservation in jobs and educational opportunities to people of the Hyderabad-Karnataka region in the districts coming under the region and outside the region.

Replying to another question, he said there is no provision to fill up vacant posts for non-teaching staff in unaided colleges.

It was correct that aided colleges had been asked to keep 50 per cent of the amount received from fees with them and remit the rest to the government.

He said a Cabinet subcommittee had been set up to prevent aided colleges from cornering grants-in-aid. Aided colleges could not expect to get grants-in-aid.

The Hyderabad-Karnataka region requires vocational, technical and community education.

But those who asked for aid from the government propose to set up educational institutions around Bangalore and Mangalore, leaving responsibility of establishing educational institutions in backward areas to the government.
