Navy Day Celebrations: NCC Naval Wing Shines in Mangalore

Mangalore, December 5, 2024 – The NCC Naval Units under Mangalore Group celebrated Indian Navy Day on December 4 with great enthusiasm, reaching out to hundreds of students across engineering and medical colleges in and around the city.

Marking the 53rd anniversary of India’s decisive victory in the 1971 Indo-Pak war and Operation Trident – the daring naval attack on Karachi harbour – the NCC Naval Wing organised interactive sessions and exhibitions at several prominent colleges, including St Joseph Engineering College, Srinivas Institute of Technology, Father Muller Medical College, and KS Hegde Medical Academy.

The day-long programme focused on spreading awareness about India’s rich maritime heritage, the strategic role of the Indian Navy in safeguarding the nation’s 7,516-km coastline and vast Exclusive Economic Zone, and the exciting career avenues available in the naval forces.

Cadets of the NCC Naval Wing demonstrated ship modelling, semaphore signalling, boat pulling, and knot-tying, while senior division cadets delivered talks on modern naval platforms, missile systems, submarines, and aircraft carriers. A special emphasis was laid on the growing importance of maritime education and the Navy’s initiatives in oceanography, hydrography, and marine engineering.

Air Commodore V. M. Ghatge (Retd), Associate NCC Officer of 3 Kar Naval Unit, who coordinated the events, said,
“Navy Day is not just about remembering our glorious past; it is about inspiring the youth to look at the sea as a frontier of opportunity. Mangalore, with its strategic location and strong educational ecosystem, is the perfect place to nurture the next generation of maritime leaders.”

The celebrations received an overwhelming response from students, many of whom expressed keen interest in joining the NCC Naval Wing or pursuing careers in the Navy, Coast Guard, or merchant navy.

Follow-up Sessions on Naval Technology

Building on the success of Navy Day, the Mangalore Group NCC Naval Units have scheduled in-depth technical sessions from December 10–12, 2024:

  • 10 Dec: Stealth Technology & Frigates (St Joseph Engineering College)
  • 11 Dec: Submarine Operations & Anti-Submarine Warfare (Srinivas Institute of Technology)
  • 12 Dec: Naval Aviation & Carrier Operations (NITTE Campus)

These sessions will feature serving and retired naval officers, live demonstrations, and virtual tours of warships. Interested students from any college are welcome to attend (prior registration with respective college NCC units recommended).

As Mangalore continues to strengthen its identity as an emerging hub for maritime education and industry, initiatives like these by the NCC Naval Wing play a vital role in channeling young talent toward the blue horizon.

Jai Hind! 🚢🇮🇳
