Mount Carmel College to Go Co-Ed from 2024–25 Academic Year
Bengaluru | January 8, 2024
In a landmark decision marking the end of a seven-decade tradition, Mount Carmel College (MCC), Bengaluru, announced that it will admit male students from the academic year 2024–25 onwards, transitioning from a premier women-only institution to a co-educational college.
The administration confirmed that the decision was taken to align with evolving educational trends and to promote inclusive academic opportunities. “The move reflects our commitment to a holistic learning environment that mirrors today’s social and professional realities,” said a statement released by the college management.
Founded in 1948, Mount Carmel College on Palace Road has long been one of India’s most prestigious women’s institutions, known for its programs in science, commerce, humanities, and management. Over the decades, it has produced some of the country’s most distinguished alumni across fields such as politics, arts, business, and public service.
According to college officials, the transition will begin gradually, with select undergraduate and postgraduate courses opening for male enrollment beginning June 2024. Infrastructure and facility upgrades are underway to accommodate the change.
The decision, however, has sparked a mix of reactions among students, faculty, and alumni. While many welcomed the move as a step toward gender inclusivity and modernization, others expressed concern about the loss of the college’s unique identity as a women’s space. Social media platforms were flooded with discussions reflecting nostalgia and curiosity about the college’s new chapter.
In response, the management assured that the institution’s core values—academic excellence, empowerment, and service—will remain unchanged. “Our foundation will continue to rest on the values of integrity, inclusiveness, and leadership,” the statement added.
With this change, Mount Carmel College joins a growing list of formerly women-only institutions in India reimagining their educational models for the 21st century.
