Karnataka Government Reviews Supreme Court Order on RTE Quota

Bengaluru: The Karnataka government is studying a recent Supreme Court order on the 25 per cent RTE quota. The directive applies to private unaided, non-minority schools. It mandates admission of students from economically weaker sections (EWS).

Supreme Court Directive

The Supreme Court has asked states to strictly enforce the Right to Education Act, 2009. It reaffirmed that 25 per cent of entry-level seats must be reserved for EWS and disadvantaged children. The order aims to ensure equal access to education.

Financial Burden Under Review

The state government is examining the financial impact of the directive. Under RTE rules, the government must reimburse private schools for each admitted student. Officials said this could cost the state several hundred crores every year.

Consultations with Leadership

The School Education Department is holding discussions with political leaders and legal experts. The government is reviewing both legal and financial aspects of the order. A final decision will be taken after these consultations.

Possible Changes to State Rules

The government may amend state-level RTE rules. These changes could relate to eligibility, admission procedures, and reimbursement systems. Any amendment must follow the central RTE Act and the Supreme Court judgment.

Concerns from Private Schools

Private school associations have expressed concern over delayed payments. They said reimbursements do not match actual expenses. Schools warned this could affect their operations.

Support from Education Experts

Education experts welcomed the Supreme Court order. They said the quota promotes social equity. They stressed the need for transparent admissions and timely payments.

Decision Awaited

The state government is expected to announce its stand soon. Guidelines may be issued before the next academic year begins.
