Australia Introduces Mandatory Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) for Student Visa Applications

Starting January 1, 2025, Australia will require a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) for student visa applications. This new policy replaces the previous acceptance of Letters of Offer and aims to enhance the integrity of Australia’s visa system by ensuring that only genuine students are granted visas1.

Key Points of the New Policy:

  • Mandatory CoE: Applicants must submit a CoE at the time of application. Applications without a CoE will be considered invalid1.
  • Enhanced Commitment: A CoE is an official electronic document issued by Australian educational institutions confirming a student’s enrolment in a registered course after tuition fees have been paid.
  • Exemptions: Foreign Affairs, Defence, and secondary exchange students can continue to use alternative forms of evidence for their intended courses of study.
  • Impact on Current Visa Holders: Current visa holders in Australia are advised to plan accordingly to avoid lapses in their visa status.

The Department of Home Affairs stated that this change reflects their commitment to ensuring the integrity of Australia’s Student Visa program and strengthening confidence in the education system. The CoE demonstrates a stronger commitment by students to their chosen institution, providing greater certainty for Australia’s international education sector
