In a significant move to honor the legacy of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, the Karnataka government has announced the renaming of Bangalore City University to ‘Dr Manmohan Singh Bengaluru City University’. This decision was revealed during Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s budget speech on March 7, 2025.
Dr. Manmohan Singh, who passed away on February 26, 2025, was India’s 13th Prime Minister and is widely recognized for his pivotal role in economic liberalization and financial reforms that have shaped modern India’s economy. The renaming of the university is seen as a tribute to his contributions to education, economy, and governance.
The initiative aims to transform the institution into a model university in the country. As part of this effort, Government Arts College and Government R.C. College will be integrated as constituent colleges under the university. The Chief Minister emphasized that this move is intended to enhance the university’s stature and academic excellence.
During his budget presentation, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah also highlighted the state’s fiscal discipline and announced various measures to improve infrastructure in Bengaluru city. The yearly grant for Bengaluru city has been increased from Rs. 3,000 crores to Rs. 7,000 crores to address traffic congestion and other urban challenges.
