CET – More Students eligible for Engineering and lesser for Medical

The results of the Common Entrance Test – CET – were out on Tuesday, and around 1.4 Lakh students had taken the test.

While the number of those eligible for Engineering courses in Karnataka, the corresponding number for medical seats has declined .

According to the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA), 96,161 candidates are eligible to join undergraduate engineering courses this year, as against 91,808 in 2013.  That is an increase of 4,353. But, for medical and dental courses, the qualifying number is 21,257 this year, as against 38,623 last year. That is a fall of 17,366.

The total number of candidates who registered for CET 2014 was 1,40,496.

Of them, 1,39,198 appeared for the tests conducted on May 1, 2 and 3 across the state.

With the results being announced, 21,257 are eligible to take up medical and dental courses, 96,161 engineering, 1,276 architecture, 70,697 agriculture, 70,071 veterinary, 68,996 food technology and 97,398 agriculture technology courses.

For the first time, the KEA conducted CET even for B Pharm and D Pharm this year, and 97,890 candidates have become eligible to take up the courses.

The three toppers in the medical/dental stream occupy the same position for the India Systems of Medicine and Homeopathy (ISHM), veterinary sciences, agriculture, B Pharm, D Pharm and food technology.

Narayana PU College, C V Raman Nagar, Bangalore has produced both the toppers in the State,  Girija Agarwal, who got the first rank in medical and dental stream and ISHM, and engineering topper Srinidhi Prabhu.

From this year, the state government will reimburse the fees of the top five students in all streams. After releasing the results, Higher Education Minister R V Deshpande said, “Reimbursement was earlier being offered only for medical, dental and engineering streams.”

Following the decision, five toppers will get to study for free if they join any of the colleges in the state through CET ranking.

Verification

Document verification for seat allocation will start from June 2 at 13 help centres across the state.

After the verification, candidates must take an acknowledgment card (green card) and slip with a secret keyword and an information booklet.

Without the keyword, students will not be able to make their choices.

Medical examination for differently-abled candidates will be held at the KEA office on May 30 from 10.30 am. Document verification for NCC and differently-abled candidates will also be done the same day. For the sports quota, documents will be verified on May 31 from 10.30 am at the KEA office.

Seat matrix

The seat matrix for engineering courses will be posted on the KEA website by May 31 and and for medical and dental seats after June 3. Medical Education Minister Dr Sharan Prakash Patil told reporters, “We are waiting for the Medical Council of India’s executive council meeting to get over on June 3. After that we will get a clear picture of new colleges and additional seats. Once that is final, we will release the matrix.”

Medical Toppers Prefer BMC

The toppers in the medical stream prefer Bangalore Medical College. Though they are all preparing for the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) entrance test slated for June 1, their first preference through CET is the BMC.

Good News for Minorities

The government has decided to credit fee loans directly to the college for students in the minority category.

“After the completion of the course, the candidates can pay back the loan to the Minority Commission in instalments,” Minister Deshpande said.
