“Kempegowda is a statesman and it would be advisable to rename BU as Kempegowda University,” he said during the Kempegowda Jayanti celebrations at Palace Grounds.
Bangalore University officials, however, said they’re not aware of any move to rename the varsity and that they’ll accept the government’s decision. Shivakumar also said all Kannada textbooks must have a lesson on Kempegowda.
When he was the energy minister in the then Congress government last year, Shivakumar had said they didn’t want to hold any massive rally, including for Kempegowda Jayanti, at Palace Grounds. The event was held at Banquet Hall, Vidhana Soudha, last year. “We changed the venue this year so that we could accommodate a lot of people,” he said.
Chief minister HD Kumaraswamy said a Kempegowda skill development university will be set up in the city. “I know about employment issues in the city and this university will not only educate youths but also make them employable,” he said.
