Education Department Launches “Shalege Baa” to Boost School Attendance and SSLC Performance

Bengaluru, July 11, 2025 — The Karnataka Education Department has rolled out an ambitious initiative called “Shalege Baa” (Come to School), aimed at improving student attendance and enhancing academic outcomes for the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examinations. This dual-pronged program seeks to address chronic absenteeism in government and aided schools while implementing a strategic action plan to elevate SSLC pass rates across the state.

Tackling Absenteeism with “Shalege Baa”

The “Shalege Baa” campaign, launched this month, is a statewide effort to encourage regular school attendance among students, particularly in rural and underserved areas. The initiative comes in response to data indicating that irregular attendance is a significant barrier to academic progress, with some districts reporting absenteeism rates as high as 20% in secondary schools.

Under the program, the Education Department has mobilized teachers, local community leaders, and parent-teacher associations to conduct door-to-door campaigns, raising awareness about the importance of consistent school attendance. Incentives such as free textbooks, uniforms, and midday meals are being highlighted to motivate families to prioritize education. Additionally, the department has introduced a digital attendance tracking system to monitor student participation in real-time, enabling schools to identify and address absenteeism promptly.

“We want every child in Karnataka to be in school, learning and growing,” said the Education Minister during the campaign’s launch event in Bengaluru. “ ‘Shalege Baa’ is not just a slogan—it’s a commitment to ensuring no student is left behind.”

The initiative also includes counseling sessions for parents and students to address barriers such as financial constraints, child labor, and early marriages, which often contribute to absenteeism. Special focus is being placed on girls’ education, with targeted outreach in districts with low female attendance rates.

SSLC Action Plan: Aiming for Academic Excellence

Alongside the attendance drive, the Education Department has unveiled a comprehensive SSLC Action Plan to improve performance in the Class 10 board examinations. The plan focuses on strengthening academic support for students, particularly in subjects like Mathematics, Science, and English, where pass rates have historically been lower.

Key components of the SSLC Action Plan include:

  • Remedial Classes: Extra coaching sessions after school hours for students struggling in core subjects, with a focus on personalized learning.
  • Teacher Training: Professional development programs for teachers to adopt innovative teaching methods, including activity-based learning and technology integration.
  • Mock Examinations: Regular practice tests to familiarize students with the SSLC exam format and reduce anxiety.
  • Study Materials: Distribution of simplified study guides, question banks, and online resources to aid exam preparation.
  • Mentorship Programs: Pairing high-performing students and alumni with those needing academic support to foster peer learning.

The department has also partnered with ed-tech platforms to provide free access to digital learning tools, ensuring students in remote areas can benefit from quality resources. Schools are being equipped with smart classrooms to enhance engagement and make learning more interactive.

Early Impact and Future Goals

Since the launch of “Shalege Baa,” early reports suggest a positive response, with several schools in districts like Kalaburagi, Raichur, and Yadgir noting a 10-15% increase in daily attendance. The SSLC Action Plan is also gaining traction, with over 5,000 teachers already trained in new pedagogical approaches.

The Education Department aims to achieve an SSLC pass rate of 90% in the 2025-26 academic year, up from last year’s 83.9%. Additionally, the “Shalege Baa” campaign targets reducing absenteeism to below 5% across all government schools by the end of 2026.

Community and Stakeholder Support

Local leaders and non-governmental organizations have praised the initiative, emphasizing its potential to transform Karnataka’s education landscape. “This is a step in the right direction. By addressing both attendance and academic performance, the government is tackling the root causes of educational inequity,” said a representative from a Bengaluru-based education NGO.

Parents, too, have expressed optimism. “My daughter used to miss school due to household responsibilities, but the counseling sessions helped us understand the importance of her education,” said Lakshmi, a parent from Tumakuru. “Now, she’s excited to attend classes regularly.”

Challenges Ahead

Despite the enthusiasm, challenges remain. Limited infrastructure in some rural schools, teacher shortages, and socio-economic barriers could hinder the program’s success. The Education Department has pledged to address these issues by allocating additional funds and collaborating with private partners to bridge resource gaps.

As Karnataka embarks on this transformative journey, the “Shalege Baa” campaign and SSLC Action Plan represent a bold vision for inclusive, quality education. With sustained effort and community support, the state hopes to empower its students to achieve their full potential and build a brighter future.
