January 16, 2025 – In a bold move that underscores his commitment to innovation and skill-based hiring, Elon Musk has extended a global invitation to “hardcore software engineers” to join his ambitious project of developing an “everything app.”
Musk, the visionary behind Tesla and SpaceX, took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce that he is seeking talented engineers who can showcase their coding prowess. In a post, he emphasized that traditional qualifications, such as educational background or professional affiliations, are not a priority. Instead, what truly matters is the engineer’s ability to produce high-quality code.
“If you’re a hardcore software engineer and want to build the everything app, please join us by sending your best work to code@x.com. We don’t care where you went to school or even whether you went to school or what ‘big name’ company you worked at1. Just show us your code,” Musk wrote on X.
The concept of an “everything app,” often referred to as a “super app,” is popular in Asia, where apps like WeChat offer a range of services, including messaging, social networking, peer-to-peer payments, and e-commerce shopping. Musk aims to replicate this model globally, creating a versatile application that integrates various services into a single platform.
Musk’s unconventional approach to hiring aligns with his belief in skill-based learning over traditional academic frameworks. He has previously advocated for a problem-solving-focused education system, rather than one centered on memorization and standardized testing.
The “everything app” project is part of Musk’s broader vision to transform X into a comprehensive platform that transcends social networking. With new services like X Money and X TV anticipated for 2025, Musk is positioning X to become a one-stop solution for users around the world.
