The fee reimbursement scheme announced by the state government three years ago for top performers in the Common Entrance Test (CET) has very few takers.
According to the information available from the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA), out of the 35 eligible students, only five applied for reimbursement last year.
Since three years, the state government is giving fee reimbursement for the top five rankers in CET in all the seven streams – engineering, Medical/Dental, ISHM, BSc Agri, BSc Veterinary, Architecture and B Pharma/D Pharma. However, the number of candidates who made use of this scheme is not more than five per year.
During CET 2014, the fifth rank holder from Medical/Engineering stream joined the Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute and the other four toppers from Architecture stream joined RV College of Engineering.
According to the KEA officials, most of the top performers in engineering join institutes like Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), National Institute of Technology (NIT), and Medical students choose seats through the All India Medical Examination. “It is rare that a top performer selects seats through the CET,” said a senior official.
According to the data available from the KEA, the state government has spent `1.61 lakh in 2014 for the fee reimbursement scheme.
It appears that the scheme will not have many takers this year too. When Express contacted the top rank holders of CET 2015, a majority of them expressed their interest to join IIT/NIT and other national-level institutes
