Mysuru, October 13, 2025 – JSS Mahavidyapeetha has launched the JSS School of Medicine in Mauritius, a bold move to globalize Karnataka’s esteemed medical education. This new institution in Vacoas strengthens healthcare training across Africa and Asia.
Karnataka’s Educational Legacy Goes Global
Since 1954, JSS Mahavidyapeetha, founded by His Holiness Jagadguru Dr. Sri Shivarathri Rajendra Mahaswamiji, has grown from a small hostel in 1928 to over 350 institutions. Based in Mysuru, Karnataka, it drives human development through education, healthcare, and social welfare. The JSS Medical College in Mysuru anchors this international effort, ensuring the Mauritius program meets India’s National Medical Commission (NMC) standards. Sri Shivarathri Deshikendra Swami of Suttur Mutt guides this mission to deliver accessible, high-quality education.
JSS Academy in Mauritius: A Solid Base
The JSS Academy of Higher Education & Research, Mauritius (JSSAHERM), started in 2006 as the island’s first private engineering school. It now offers diverse programs on an 8-acre campus in Bonne Terre, Vacoas, with modern classrooms, labs, and residences. Registered with Mauritius’s Higher Education Commission (HEC) in 2018, the academy, managed by the JSS Education Foundation, draws students from Mauritius, Africa, and beyond. The new medical school builds on this foundation.
MBBS Program: World-Class Training
The JSS School of Medicine delivers an MBBS program focused on innovation, research, and clinical skills, modeled on JSS Medical College, Mysuru. The HEC accredits the degrees, ensuring global recognition. The program targets students from the Indian Ocean region, with plans to expand. JSS prioritizes affordability, aligning with its inclusive ethos.
Global Healthcare Impact
JSS Mutt Seer Shivarathri Deshikendra Swami called the launch a “game-changer” for Mauritius’s medical education. The school addresses shortages in trained doctors, boosts local healthcare, and fosters India-Africa collaborations. It positions Mauritius as a hub for affordable medical training, attracting international students and faculty. This initiative supports sustainable health and education goals in the Global South.
Leadership and Future Plans
SP Manjunath, Secretary of JSS Mahavidyapeetha, and C G Betsurmath, Executive Secretary, emphasized the India-Mauritius synergy. “This school builds a bridge for healthcare prosperity,” said Swami Deshikendra. JSS aims to deepen African university partnerships and expand allied health sciences, staying true to its core values: quality, affordability, and impact.
