On October 13, 2024, JSS Mahavidyapeetha, the revered educational and spiritual organization based in Mysuru, Karnataka, marked a historic milestone by inaugurating the JSS School of Medicine in Vacoas-Phoenix, Mauritius. This is the first full-fledged Indian private medical college on African soil and a significant step in extending high-quality, value-based medical education beyond India’s borders.
The new campus, spread across lush greenery in the highlands of Vacoas, represents more than just infrastructure — it embodies JSS’s 65-year legacy of blending academic excellence with ethical and compassionate healthcare training.
With this launch, JSS Mahavidyapeetha has now established medical colleges in India (Mysuru), Nepal (planned), and now Mauritius, creating a powerful triangular network of medical education across Asia and Africa.
The Mauritius campus will follow the same rigorous curriculum approved by the National Medical Commission (NMC) of India and is recognized by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) through its accrediting agency. Students graduating from here will be eligible to appear for licensing examinations worldwide, including:
Mauritius offers a unique blend of political stability, world-class infrastructure, English and French as official languages, and a strategic location that serves as a gateway between Africa and Asia. For aspiring doctors from India, Africa, and the Indian diaspora, the island nation provides a safe, cosmopolitan environment with a healthcare system that ranks among the best in Africa.
The JSS School of Medicine is attached to a 750-bed multi-specialty teaching hospital currently under development, ensuring students receive hands-on clinical training from day one.
The college has officially opened applications for the MBBS program for the academic year 2025–26, with an initial intake of 150 seats.
Eligibility follows NMC guidelines:
International students from Africa, the Middle East, and the Indian diaspora are especially encouraged to apply.
His Holiness Jagadguru Sri Shivarathri Deshikendra Mahaswamiji, the guiding force behind JSS Mahavidyapeetha, has always emphasized healthcare as a sacred service. Speaking at the inauguration, His Holiness said:
“Wherever there is a need for compassionate and competent doctors, JSS will be there to train them — irrespective of borders.”
This Mauritius chapter is a living testament to that vision.
With the JSS School of Medicine now operational, Karnataka’s time-tested model of medical education — one that produced thousands of doctors serving in rural India and across the globe — is ready to nurture the next generation of healthcare leaders from Africa and beyond.
For students dreaming of a world-class medical education in a serene, multicultural setting, backed by an institution with decades of proven excellence, the doors are now open.
Applications for the 2025–26 MBBS batch are live.
