Karnataka Budget Announces Major School Education Reforms

The Government of Karnataka has announced a series of initiatives to strengthen the school education system in the 2026–27 state budget. The reforms aim to improve infrastructure, learning outcomes, and accessibility in government schools across the state.

₹3,900 Crore Allocation for Karnataka Public Schools

A major highlight of the budget is the allocation of ₹3,900 crore to upgrade around 800 schools under the Karnataka Public Schools (KPS) model.

The KPS model integrates education from primary to pre-university level on a single campus, allowing students to complete their schooling without shifting institutions. The initiative also focuses on improving facilities, modern classrooms, and digital learning resources.

Strengthening Government School Infrastructure

The government plans to enhance infrastructure in selected schools by introducing smart classrooms, science laboratories, and improved sports facilities. Authorities believe that better infrastructure will encourage more families to enroll their children in government schools.

Officials said the upgraded campuses will provide a more comprehensive academic environment, reducing disparities between public and private schooling.

Focus on Holistic Education

Under the reforms, schools will emphasize holistic learning through extracurricular activities, skill development, and technology-enabled teaching. Teachers will also receive additional training to adopt modern pedagogical practices and digital tools in classrooms.

The government expects the reforms to improve overall learning outcomes and better prepare students for higher education and competitive exams.

Expanding Access to Quality Education

Education experts note that expanding the KPS model can help bridge educational gaps between rural and urban areas. By providing integrated schooling from primary to pre-university level, the program aims to ensure continuity in education and reduce dropout rates.

The initiatives announced in the budget reflect the state’s broader effort to strengthen public education and create more opportunities for students across Karnataka.
