Bengaluru, January 28, 2025 – The Karnataka government has approved the Minority Education Bill, aimed at easing regulations for higher education institutions run by minority communities. The new bill allows these institutions to enroll fewer students from minority communities while still retaining their minority status. Additionally, it mandates that two-thirds of the staff in these institutions must belong to the respective minority communities.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced the decision, highlighting that the move aligns with the provisions of Article 30 of the Indian Constitution and the norms of the National Minority Commission. The bill is expected to facilitate better educational opportunities for minority communities in the state, ensuring that these institutions can focus on quality education and holistic development.

The Minority Education Bill has been lauded by various minority groups and educationists as a step towards preserving the cultural and educational rights of minority communities. It aims to strike a balance between regulatory compliance and the autonomy of minority institutions.
