In a major development that has sent shockwaves through thousands of NEET-UG aspirants in Karnataka, the Hon’ble High Court of Karnataka has set aside the provisional third-round seat allotment list for MBBS and BDS courses released by the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA).
The single-judge bench, in its order dated December 4, 2025, directed KEA to completely redo the third-round counselling process “afresh” while strictly following the methodology already laid down by the court in earlier rounds.
The core issue was non-compliance with the court’s own guidelines on how seats are to be allocated across different quotas — Government quota (GQ), Private quota (PQT), NRI quota, Other quota, and seats in deemed universities.
Petitioners argued (and the court agreed) that KEA had deviated from the prescribed sequence and rules while preparing the third-round provisional list. This deviation allegedly caused several students to lose seats they were legitimately entitled to, while others were allotted seats in violation of the established matrix.
The court made it clear: any seat allocation exercise must scrupulously follow the methodology it had already approved in previous orders. Failure to do so renders the entire list liable to be quashed.
Almost certainly. With the third round now reset and the academic calendar already compressed, colleges may have to push the commencement of classes by a few weeks. However, the court is usually mindful of not letting the entire academic year suffer, so expect an expedited revised schedule.
This judgment reinforces that no authority—not even KEA—can take shortcuts or deviate from judicially approved counselling rules, no matter how pressing the timeline. While the immediate fallout is anxiety and uncertainty for thousands of students, the long-term winner is transparency and merit.
Keep your documents ready, stay updated through official channels only, and avoid panic. The seats will be allotted—only this time, strictly by the rulebook.
We will keep tracking this story and update you as soon as KEA releases the revised counselling notification.
