On National Science Day 2026, the Department of Science and Technology, Karnataka honored four rural students for their innovative research in green chemistry, highlighting how young minds can drive scientific progress beyond exams and textbooks.
The ceremony celebrated students who pursued advanced scientific research while still in school, proving that innovation can emerge from any corner of the state.
The four students conducted research on sustainable nanoparticle synthesis, using plant-based materials instead of harmful chemicals to create metal oxide nanoparticles. Their work demonstrated practical applications in environmental protection, including:
Through this work, the students showed how chemistry can directly solve environmental problems.
Speakers at the event stressed that the students’ achievements reflect a shift from rote learning to hands-on experimentation and inquiry. The recognition showed that scientific excellence grows from curiosity and problem-solving, not only from marks and ranks.
The students described how they conducted experiments with limited resources and felt motivated when their findings produced real-world results.
The awardees came from rural and tribal regions, reinforcing the importance of expanding scientific opportunities to underserved communities. Teachers and mentors guided the students and provided basic laboratory support that enabled them to complete meaningful research projects at an early age.
The initiative aims to motivate more students from government and rural schools to choose careers in science and technology.
During the celebrations, state officials reaffirmed their commitment to building innovation labs and promoting project-based learning across Karnataka. By honoring student researchers in green chemistry, the state advanced its goal of nurturing scientific temper and sustainable thinking among young learners.
The National Science Day programme ended with a clear message: scientific discovery can begin in villages and classrooms, not only in elite laboratories. By recognizing four rural students for their work in green chemistry and environmental nanotechnology, Karnataka highlighted the power of youth-led innovation in shaping a cleaner and more sustainable future.
