Bengaluru, October 18, 2025 – In a ground-breaking move to modernize administrative processes and curb inefficiencies, the Karnataka government has officially rolled out an AI-powered facial recognition system for marking staff attendance across government and aided schools, as well as pre-university (PU) colleges. The initiative, launched today, aims to enhance transparency, eliminate proxy attendance, and streamline operations in the education sector.
The new system leverages advanced artificial intelligence to accurately identify and record the presence of teaching and non-teaching staff in real time. By integrating facial recognition technology, the Karnataka government seeks to address long-standing issues such as manual errors and fraudulent attendance practices, which have plagued traditional attendance systems.
According to the Department of School Education and Literacy, the implementation began simultaneously across all districts of Karnataka, following successful pilot programs conducted in select schools and colleges. These pilots demonstrated an impressive 95% accuracy rate, instilling confidence in the system’s reliability and scalability.
“This is a significant step toward embracing technology to improve accountability and efficiency in our education system,” said Karnataka’s Education Minister during the launch event in Bengaluru. “The AI-based attendance system ensures that our staff are present and focused on delivering quality education to students.”
The facial recognition system operates through a network of cameras installed at designated entry points in schools and PU colleges. Staff members are required to register their facial biometric data in a secure, centralized database during the initial setup phase. Each day, as employees arrive, the system scans their faces and matches them against the stored data, logging their attendance automatically within seconds.
To ensure privacy and data security, the Karnataka government has partnered with certified technology providers who comply with stringent data protection protocols. The system is designed to store only essential biometric data, encrypted to prevent unauthorized access. Additionally, the initiative adheres to guidelines set by the Government of India for biometric data usage.
The rollout includes user-friendly dashboards for administrators to monitor attendance records in real time. These dashboards provide detailed reports, enabling school and college authorities to track patterns, address absenteeism, and ensure compliance with attendance policies.
The decision to implement the AI-based system state-wide follows a series of successful pilot programs conducted in districts such as Bengaluru Urban, Mysuru, and Dharwad. During the pilot phase, the system was tested in over 100 institutions, including government schools, aided schools, and PU colleges. The trials focused on assessing the technology’s accuracy, ease of use, and adaptability to diverse environments.
“The pilot results were highly encouraging,” said a senior official from the Department of School Education and Literacy. “With a 95% accuracy rate, the system proved effective even in challenging conditions, such as low lighting or crowded entry points. We’ve fine-tuned the technology to ensure it performs consistently across Karnataka’s diverse settings.”
The state-wide rollout, which began today, covers approximately 50,000 institutions, including 34,000 government schools, 12,000 aided schools, and 4,000 PU colleges. Over 2.5 lakh staff members are expected to transition to the new system within the next three months. To facilitate a smooth transition, the government has launched training programs for school administrators and technical support teams to address any implementation challenges.
One of the primary motivations behind adopting the AI-based system is to eliminate proxy attendance, a practice where individuals mark attendance on behalf of absent colleagues. This issue has long undermined accountability in educational institutions, leading to inefficiencies and resource misallocation.
“The facial recognition system ensures that only the registered individual can mark their attendance,” explained a technical consultant involved in the project. “Unlike manual or card-based systems, it’s nearly impossible to bypass this technology, ensuring greater transparency.”
The initiative has received widespread support from education stakeholders, including teachers’ unions and school management committees. However, some concerns have been raised regarding the system’s performance in rural areas with limited infrastructure, such as unreliable electricity or internet connectivity.
To address these challenges, the government has introduced offline capabilities for the system, allowing attendance data to be stored locally and synced with the central database once connectivity is restored. Additionally, backup manual attendance systems will remain in place during the initial phase to ensure continuity.
The rollout has sparked a mix of optimism and cautious observation among educators and administrators. “This is a welcome change,” said Priya Sharma, a government school principal in Mangaluru. “The system saves time and reduces paperwork, allowing us to focus more on teaching and student welfare.”
However, some teachers have expressed concerns about potential technical glitches and the need for robust support systems. “The technology is promising, but we need assurance that technical issues won’t disrupt our daily operations,” said Ramesh Gowda, a mathematics teacher at a PU college in Hubballi.
The Karnataka government has assured stakeholders that it will closely monitor the system’s performance during the initial months and address any challenges promptly. Plans are also underway to extend the facial recognition system to other government departments, with the Department of Higher Education exploring its application in universities and technical institutes.
Karnataka’s adoption of AI-based facial recognition for attendance marks it as a pioneer among Indian states in leveraging cutting-edge technology for administrative reform. The initiative aligns with the broader vision of Digital India, which emphasizes the use of technology to enhance governance and public service delivery.
Experts believe Karnataka’s model could inspire other states to adopt similar systems. “This is a scalable solution that can be customized for different sectors,” said Dr. Ananya Rao, an AI policy researcher based in Bengaluru. “If implemented effectively, it could set a benchmark for transparency and efficiency in public institutions across the country.”
As the system takes root, the Karnataka government remains committed to refining the technology and addressing stakeholder feedback. With its focus on accountability, efficiency, and innovation, the AI-based facial recognition attendance system is poised to transform the administrative landscape of Karnataka’s education sector.
