Newcastle University’s Employability Seminar in India

Newcastle University, UK, a major research-intensive university, located in Newcastle upon Tyne in the north-east of England, concluded its last leg of the employability seminar in Mumbai. The seminar had started from June 17, 2017 in Delhi followed by Bangalore and Chennai for students considering to study in UK for the 2017/18 academic year.

The seminar was arranged for the students and parents to get insights of the university life and career prospects during and after studying at Newcastle University. Faculty members from Newcastle University International Office, Business School and Faculty of Medical Sciences came to India to be a part of this seminar and help students get all the required information. Present at the event were Ms. Naomi Oosman-Watts, Assistant Director (Career Management), Careers Services, Ms. Laura Mitford, International Student Recruitment Officer, Mr. Steve Bremmer, Student Conversions Coordinator, Newcastle University Business School and Ms. Preety Bansal, Country Manager-India.

Commenting on the Employability Seminar, Ms. Preety Bansal, Country Manager-India, Newcastle University, UK, said, “Students here got a chance to get first-hand information about the range of services that our award-winning career services offer and speak to us face to face and get answers to all their queries needed for informed decision making.” Furthering on it she said, “The platform provided a good opportunity for the students to network with other Newcastle offer holders and make friends before starting the journey with Newcastle University.”

The seminar commenced with an ice breaking session between the students which was followed by Ms. Watts sharing details about how the university helps its students make a career that allows them global-mobility and opens international links for them through their network around the world.  Sharing the experience of the Employability Seminar in India Ms. Watts said, “It was a real pleasure to come to these events in India and be able to meet such talented and enthusiastic students who have selected Newcastle University as their destination of choice. As one of the largest careers services in the UK we have an extremely comprehensive programme of support for employability including individual support for students, placements and internships as well as a bespoke offer for students joining us from India.” Adding on she shares, “We are proud to see that when they graduate, the majority of our students are ready for a successful career in the global job market. We are widely recognised for our outstanding careers provision: employers place us in the top 20 most targeted universities in the UK, we have just received a Gold Award for our Teaching Excellence which includes our support for employability and we recently won the Target Jobs Award for Best Employability Strategy.”

Ms. Watts’ presentation highlighted that Newcastle University is ‘one of the most targeted universities’ among employers in the UK. She also shared with the students’ information about special services such as assisting students with placement opportunities for those who wish to return to the home country on completion of their course. The presentation was followed by an

in-depth one-on-one interaction with the students where they asked questions related to admissions, careers and opportunities in Business School and Biosciences.

The main purpose behind this event was to address the queries of the students who wanted to apply for higher education in UK. Sharing the experience at the seminar, Karanjeet Puri, a student said, “The session organized by Newcastle University in Delhi was extremely informative and helpful. The career support representative, Ms. Naomi was helped clear all my doubts and I’m really happy and proud to have received this opportunity to be associated with Newcastle University towards my future career development.”

Mrs. Usha Amin, Mother of a student present at the occasion added, “We are highly appreciative of Newcastle University for organizing the employability seminar in Bangalore. It gave us a complete picture of the students’ life from the time they arrive at the airport to the career opportunities they have access to. We as parents are full of praises of the recruitment, marketing and the career services team. We also would like to place our highest regard for the university to grant the Vice Chancellor’s scholarship to deserving international students. This will go a long way for the students to be committed and perform their best, apart from the financial help that it provides.”

Also present during the Mumbai seminar was Alisha Sadikot, a Newcastle University alumni who shared her experience during her stay in Newcastle University. Ms. Alisha feels the environment was very friendly, when she joined Newcastle University. Highlighting her experience, she shared, “We were 60 in our batch and all were given equal attention. By the end of the year when I got back from Newcastle University I got a job offer in Mumbai in one of the top museum which was only possible because I was a graduate from Newcastle University.”
