Private Un-aided medical colleges to stop admission under Government quota – HC

In a directive to the Privated un-aided medical colleges (PUA) –  under Comed-K, KRLMPCA and deemed universities, The Karnataka high court has  asked them to not admit students against government quota seats.

A division bench headed by Justice KL Manjunath directed Comed-K to adhere to the agreement dated March 10, 2014 regarding seat sharing. It was told not to admit students against the 33% seats reserved for government quota students. With regards to KRLMPCA, the figure stands at 20% and deemed universities have 25% government quota seats.

In case admissions have already been made, they would be subject to the result of the petition pending before court, the bench observed. The matter has been posted for hearing on Monday. The court ordered that notices be issued to Comed-K, KRLMPCA and deemed universities, asking them to file objections.

Earlier, N Sivasailam, principal secretary, health and family welfare (medical education) filed an affidavit stating the government has no power to ask deemed universities to reserve 25% seats in both UG and PG medical colleges in favour of the government. He also said the government is seeking a legal opinion regarding what action can be taken against the said colleges. However, the bench opined that the state is virtually playing with the life of students.
