Product Design Careers in India

Product design is a crucial part of everyday life. Everything around us – from toothbrushes to big buses – is the result of product design. Product designers can make a real difference in the way people carry out everyday tasks. There is also an increasing demand for product designers in India. Thus, a career in product design can be quite lucrative as well as impactful.

There are many product design colleges in India that offer both undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the subject. Besides a degree, companies also look for graduates with a significant amount of work experience. Therefore, it is imperative that those aspiring for a career in product design take up internships with different product design companies throughout their course of study. This will enable them to step into the industry understanding its expectations.

Scope of Product Design in India

Product design isn’t a novel concept in India. It has been part of the country’s DNA for decades. However, the booming economy has brought it to the forefront. It has created an interesting and competitive market for new products. Consumer behaviour too has changed over the years, with demand for different products on the rise. Brands are competing with each other to cater to these demands by providing what their consumers need and more.

There is a dearth of skilled and qualified product designers in the country. But the landscape is rapidly changing. According to reports from the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), the demand for product designers is increasing annually by a rate of 10%.  The Government of India has introduced initiatives such as ‘Make in India’, which have only pushed product designers to set new trends in the industry.

Product Designer Salary in India

The average salary for a product designer in India is roughly around INR 5,50,000 per year. Salaries for product designers range anywhere from INR 2,40,000 and can go up to INR 15,00,000. As with any conventional job, salaries for product designers also tend to correspond with experience. The more experience they have, the greater their salary.

Degree influences salary to a great extent. Talented product designers with a Bachelor’s degree may get a job right after graduation. However, a Master’s degree in Product Design will help them get placed in a top design company with a heftier salary package. There are many design colleges in India that offer advanced courses in product design. Some of the more popular names include NID, LISAA, Strate School of Design India, etc.

Location also affects the take home. For example, cities such as Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, and Ahmedabad top the list when it comes to design. Considering this, it is evident a top product design course in Bangalore or Mumbai will help designers get into the industry sooner with a good salary.

Companies are always on the lookout for new and innovative ideas for their products. As such, product designers are in demand in many industries. With a degree and ample experience, product designers can expect a rewarding career in the field.
