Sand Sculpture of Taj Mahal Draws Crowds

Artists from Chitrakala Parishat on Thursday gave the city its version of the Taj Mahal with a sand sculpture of the monument of love. Erected as part of the Family Fair, the sculpture is on display at RBANM’s School Grounds near Commercial Street. The fair will be on till May 30.

Manju Krishna, Gubendra and their classmates, all final-year students of Masters in Visual Arts,  worked on the sculpture for two weeks and used two truckloads of sand. The monument is eight feet high and twelve feet wide. “Creating sand art when the weather is so hot was challenging. The sculpture collapsed thrice due to lack of humidity. It is important to keep watering it,” said Krishna, the structure designer.

Event organiser Gautam Agarwal said, “I saw a sand sculpture of Taj Mahal in Bhubhaneswar and decided to invite students to work on it,” he added.
