BENGALURU: Ten government schools from across Karnataka were honoured for their outstanding commitment to environmental protection and sustainability under the Mission Prakriti initiative at a special ceremony held in Bengaluru. The awards recognised schools that actively involved students in conservation efforts and eco-friendly practices.
The programme, titled “Mission Prakriti: From Classrooms to Conservation – Leading the Change”, aims to nurture environmental awareness and responsibility among schoolchildren through hands-on learning.
The award-winning schools represented different regions of the state, reflecting the wide reach of the initiative. Their projects focused on areas such as waste management, wildlife awareness, water conservation, tree plantation, and community outreach.
Officials said the selected schools demonstrated how student-driven activities can bring measurable change both within school campuses and in surrounding neighbourhoods.
Addressing students and teachers, Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa stressed the importance of learning beyond academic scores.
He said education should shape character and social responsibility, not just examination performance. According to him, awareness and discipline in daily habits—such as cleanliness and environmental care—can help build a more responsible generation.
He also highlighted global examples of environmental discipline and encouraged students to adopt similar practices in their own lives.
In a major policy announcement, the minister revealed plans to introduce moral science textbooks for Classes 1 to 10 starting from the next academic year.
The new subject will focus on values such as honesty, empathy, environmental responsibility, and civic sense, aiming to complement academic learning with ethical education.
Officials said the move is intended to strengthen character formation at an early stage of schooling.
Education department officials praised the efforts of government school teachers who guided students in designing and implementing environmental projects under the programme.
They noted that initiatives like Mission Prakriti help transform classrooms into centres of practical learning, where students gain real-world understanding of sustainability challenges.
Students who participated in the programme shared how activities such as nature walks, cleanliness drives, and wildlife awareness campaigns helped them understand the importance of protecting the environment.
Several schools reported improved student participation and stronger links with local communities through conservation campaigns.
The Mission Prakriti awards underline Karnataka’s push toward integrating environmental consciousness into school education. With the planned introduction of moral science textbooks, the state aims to combine academic excellence with values-based and eco-friendly learning.
Education officials said such initiatives will play a key role in shaping socially responsible and environmentally aware citizens in the years to come
