University of Southampton is a founding member of the Russell Group and has a global reputation for leading-edge research and innovation. It is a global top 100 university and one of the UK’s leading universities for scientific research with an international reputation for its teaching excellence and research activities.
Medicine at University of Southampton is a thriving and ambitious multi-disciplinary faculty – a national leader in a medical education in UK, with an outstanding reputation for a combined expertise in research and teaching. In 40 years since the inception of Medical Education at University of Southampton, it has trained thousands of doctors and scientists, and has become a world leader in fields that include cancer, osteoporosis, nutrition, allergy and immunology.
The BMBS Medicine and BMedSc programme is structured to provide an amalgamation of theory and practical hands-on experience. Southampton pioneered the approach of early clinical contact and students are excited that they meet patients within the first 3-4 weeks of starting being taught clinical skills in the first two years. In Year 2, students have a healthcare support workers placement that enables them to gain insight into being a member of a multi-professional team working in a hospital.
In year 3, students undertake a research study. Having been taught by leading researchers, the project offers the opportunity to work in their research groups. Students can select from a wide range of disciplines in clinical, biomedical, educational or social sciences backgrounds. Students may work in the University research labs, hospital wards, or general practices in the community. The project concludes with each student presenting their work in a research conference which is then followed by clinical placements in hospitals, practicing in the Southampton, Portsmouth and Winchester areas. On successful completion of this year, students are awarded with Bachelor of Medical Sciences (BMedSc). Students are awarded Bachelor of Medical Sciences (BMedSc) degree on successful completion of year 3.
Further placements are attended in year 4, in a range of clinical specialties in Southampton and hospitals in the Wessex region. In the final year, students gain experience in a wide range of hospitals, communities and general practices in the South of England and undertake an elective placement. The 8 week elective is often considered the highlight of the programme and offers an opportunity for students to experience clinical medicine in a centre of their choice, anywhere in the world agreed by the faculty. Final year students are attached to clinical teams on an apprenticeship basis, wherein they learn the skills required to begin foundation programme.
Included in the BM5 programme, is an opportunity for medical students to take a one year intercalated classified honours master’s level degree (Master in Medical Science).
