500 government schools to be transformed

The four-year project aims to transform 500 government schools across Karnataka into Karnataka Public Schools, with work planned through 2029-30.

Schools with the potential to attract larger numbers of students are being selected for the upgrade, with the government aiming for each KPS to have the capacity to serve at least 1,200 students.

The KPS model is designed to bring multiple stages of education together on a single campus, creating larger and better-equipped government institutions.

₹1,750 crore ADB assistance

The financing structure of the project is significant:

Funding sourceAmount
Asian Development Bank₹1,750 crore
Government of Karnataka₹750 crore
Total project investment₹2,500 crore
Schools to be developed500
Project period2026–2030

The ADB assistance forms the bulk of the project funding, with the state government providing the remaining contribution.

ADB has separately described the programme as one that will establish 500 integrated Karnataka public-school clusters, providing seamless education from the pre-primary stage onwards.

From LKG to Class 12 under one roof

One of the major objectives of the KPS model is to provide students with access to education from LKG through Class 12/II PU within an integrated school system.

The government says the schools will offer Kannada and English-medium education, along with improved infrastructure and learning facilities.

The integrated approach is intended to reduce the need for students to move between different institutions as they progress through their education.

AI, computers and digital education

Technology will be an important component of the upgraded schools.

The programme includes computer and AI education, alongside broader skill-development initiatives. The government also plans to strengthen science, technology and other learning facilities as part of the transformation of the KPS network.

This comes as Karnataka increasingly looks to introduce technology and artificial intelligence into school education and prepare students for a changing employment landscape.

Career guidance and competitive-exam preparation from Class 6

Another significant feature is the proposed introduction of career guidance and competitive-examination preparation from Class 6.

The programme will also focus on improving the performance of students in Class 10 and Class 12 examinations, with continuous monitoring of academic progress.

For students in government schools, this could provide earlier exposure to career options and preparation strategies that are often available through private coaching and guidance programmes.

Focus on skills, sports and extracurricular activities

The upgraded KPS institutions are expected to provide opportunities beyond conventional classroom education.

The programme includes:

  • Skill development
  • Career guidance
  • Computer and AI education
  • Music and literature
  • Sports and talent development
  • Extracurricular activities
  • Bilingual education
  • Student progress monitoring
  • Competitive-exam preparation

The government also plans to provide free transportation for students under the programme.

Recruitment of 15,000 teachers

Teacher availability will be another important part of the KPS expansion.

School Education and Literacy Minister Madhu Bangarappa said the agreement includes plans for the recruitment of 15,000 teachers, particularly teachers with computer-science expertise.

The availability of qualified teachers will be crucial if the upgraded schools are to deliver the technology, skills and academic programmes envisioned under the project.

A major push for government-school education

The KPS initiative represents a significant attempt to make government schools more attractive to parents by combining better infrastructure, technology, academic support and extracurricular opportunities.

Rather than focusing solely on building classrooms, the project is intended to create larger, integrated educational institutions capable of providing students with a broader range of services and learning opportunities.

The initiative could be particularly significant for families in rural and underserved areas, where access to well-equipped schools and specialised academic guidance can be limited.

ADB’s major investment in Karnataka’s education sector

The scale of the ADB assistance is noteworthy. Karnataka officials have described it as the first time the multilateral development bank has provided such a large amount of financial assistance to the education sector in India.

ADB officials reportedly reviewed Karnataka’s KPS plans, implementation measures and the state’s commitment to improving government-school education before approving the assistance.

What the KPS project could mean for parents and students

If implemented as planned, the upgraded schools could offer government-school students access to:

Integrated schooling → better infrastructure → digital and AI learning → skills → career guidance → sports and extracurricular activities

The emphasis on career guidance from Class 6 could also help students make more informed decisions about higher education and careers at an earlier stage.

For parents, the combination of free education, transportation and expanded facilities could make KPS institutions a more attractive alternative for school education.

With the project scheduled to run through 2029-30, parents, teachers and students will be watching closely to see how quickly the selected schools are upgraded and when the new facilities and programmes become operational.

Karnataka’s ₹2,500 crore KPS project at a glance

The proposed transformation of 500 Karnataka Public Schools is much more than an infrastructure upgrade. The government aims to create integrated schools offering education from the early years through higher secondary level, supported by technology, AI, skills training, career guidance, sports and extracurricular activities.

If successfully implemented, the programme could significantly reshape the government-school landscape in Karnataka and provide thousands of students with access to more comprehensive educational opportunities.
